Institution Building

Bhasha Trust and the Adivasi Academy as a part of their ongoing effort to conserve tribal culture and knowledge systems while providing a new development alternative to tribal and nomadic communities of India are also involved in the task of building similar Peoples’ Institutions in other parts of the country, so as to widen the scope of their ongoing activities.

Himlok: Institute for Himalayan Studies
Bhasha Trust and Adivasi Academy have established an International Institute for Himalayan Studies located in Himachal Pradesh. Himlok was established in 2006 will have features of a formal university engaged in research, publication, formal courses of instruction; as well as features of a Foundation such as undertaking cultural and ecological conservation or large-scale field studies and projects of development.

So far Himlok is running a certificate course in Himalayan culture, Himlok is engaged in documenting the arts and culture of Himalayan communities and doing survey work into the socio-ecomomic conditions of various villages. A magazine for women is also being published and a community library is operational. It is envisioned that Himlok will be an institute of international standards devoted to all aspects of conservation, documentation, study, research and promotion that constitute Himalayan Studies as a composite and interdisciplinary field of knowledge.
